A lot of books and eBooks have been written on how to pay or fire your boss, and a lot of TV shows and motivational talks have been given on how to turn around and employ your boss – if you both feel like it.

The main substance or kernel of these books and seminars is on being your own boss and having paid employees in your own payroll. People don’t just wake up one day and decide to leave their present jobs or even fire their bosses if you like, there are events and situations that prelude their decisions to leave for good, and these reasons are as personal as they are organizational.

You can be forced to leave your current job or consider firing your own boss if you –

  • Have personal and official issues with your boss or manager
  • Have issues with the company culture or work environment
  • Feel undervalued and underutilized at your job
  • Find yourself a mismatch with the job required of you
  • Cannot achieve your personal and life dreams or ambitions through your job
  • Find the job taking a negative toll on your time, health, and finances
  • Find you can build a better business structure for yourself as a boss rather than being an employee

The above among others are some of the reasons why you may consider leaving your current job or firing your boss, but before you move ahead to press the eject button, you might want to do the following first;

  • Have a solid business plan and business structure in place before considering anything further.
  • Have a side-business that fetches you a handsome income by the side before deciding to leave your current job.
  • Have a foolproof survival-plan that could sustain you for at least two years in place before pressing the eject button.
  • Learn all there is about your current and future job and be the master at both before taking the plunge.
  • Touch up your resume or CV and highlight your selling points and be certain you’re good to go.
  • Start networking and making more contacts in the line of your proposed business.

Talk to your current employer and without putting all your cards on the table – tell him you feel like moving on. Secure his goodwill as something to fall back on even if you really don’t need it, and be sure he can give you a good recommendation if need be.
